EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Charles Gravier, Comte de Vergennes: A Prominent Figure in Eighteenth-Century French Diplomacy" Charles Gravier, Comte de Vergennes (1719-1787), an esteemed statesman and diplomat, is depicted in this exquisitely hand-colored lithograph from Le Bibliophile Jacob's "Costumes Historiques de la France." Born in Dijon, France, Vergennes rose to prominence during the reign of King Louis XV and continued to serve under King Louis XVI. The Comte de Vergennes is shown here in the formal attire of the Ancien Régime, wearing a voluminous red robe with gold trim and a matching tricorn hat adorned with a white feather. The intricate detail of the lithograph highlights the elegance and opulence of the period, with the rich textures and colors of the fabric, as well as the meticulously rendered accessories, such as the gold-embroidered waistcoat and the ornate sword at his side. As the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1774 to 1787, Vergennes played a crucial role in shaping France's foreign policy during a time of great political and diplomatic upheaval. He skillfully navigated the complex web of European alliances and negotiations, most notably securing the alliance with Austria and brokering the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which ended the American Revolutionary War. Vergennes' diplomatic prowess extended beyond Europe, as he also pursued a policy of expansion in the Americas, leading to the acquisition of Louisiana in 1803. Despite his many accomplishments, Vergennes faced criticism for his role in the disastrous war against Austria in 1788, which contributed to the growing unrest in France and ultimately led to the French Revolution. This image of Charles Gravier, Comte de Vergennes, offers a glimpse into the opulent world of eighteenth-century French diplomacy and serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of this remarkable statesman.
