EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from John Curtis's seminal work, "British Entomology," specifically Plate 293, which was published between 1824 and 1839. The plate features a detailed illustration of the Wood Cricket, scientifically known as Acheta sylvestris or Nemobius sylvestris. The Wood Cricket is a common orthopteran species, belonging to the family Gryllidae, and is native to Europe and Asia. The intricately drawn illustration showcases the cricket's elongated hind legs, which are adapted for jumping, and its distinctive camouflaged body, which helps it blend in with its woodland habitat. The Wood Cricket is depicted in its natural environment, surrounded by various plants, including the Marsh Trefoil, Menyanthes trifoliata. This aquatic plant, also known as the Three-leaved Water Crowfoot, is native to wetlands throughout Europe and Asia. Its trifoliate leaves and small, white flowers are clearly visible in the background of the plate. John Curtis (1794-1862), who was both an entomologist and a botanist, created this work as part of his extensive contributions to the scientific community during the 19th century. The plates in "British Entomology" were produced under his direction, with the illustrations being executed by skilled natural history artists. This particular plate, along with the others in the series, showcases the meticulous attention to detail and the high-quality production values that were characteristic of Curtis's work. The Wood Cricket and Marsh Trefoil are brought together in this beautiful and informative plate, offering a glimpse into the natural history of the British Isles during the 1820s and 1830s.
