EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 456, featuring the common mole cricket, Gryllotalpa vulgaris (syn. Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa), and the water blinks, Montia fontana. The plate, published between 1824 and 1839, is part of the extensive work by the renowned English botanist and entomologist, John Obadiah Westwood, who served as the assistant to the eminent naturalist, John Curtis, FLS. The intricately detailed illustration showcases the mole cricket, a fascinating orthopteran insect, with its powerful hind legs adapted for burrowing in the soil. The mole cricket's elongated, cylindrical body is covered in small, overlapping plates, providing it with excellent camouflage in its subterranean habitat. The water blinks, a small, delicate herbaceous plant, is depicted in the background, its tiny, pink-tinged flowers adding a splash of color to the otherwise monochromatic scene. Orthopterans, such as mole crickets, are characterized by their long antennae, large hind legs, and wings folded under their bodies. The mole cricket, however, is an exceptional case among orthopterans as it is an obligate subterranean species, spending most of its life in burrows. The water blinks, on the other hand, is a common plant found in wet areas, particularly near watercourses. This stunning plate, with its meticulous attention to detail, is a testament to the remarkable natural history exploration of the 19th century. The collaboration between Curtis and Westwood resulted in a significant contribution to the scientific understanding of the natural world, showcasing the beauty and diversity of British insects and plants.
