This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the final scene of the Dance of the Whirling Dervishes, also known as the Mawlawi Tasawwuf or the Sama ceremony. The Dervishes, dressed in traditional attire with tall conical hats, are seen whirling in a circle in a state of ecstasy, lost in their spiritual journey. The dance is accompanied by musicians playing drums, psaltery, and sistrum, creating a hypnotic rhythm. The Dervishes, followers of the Sufi branch of Islam, are often referred to as penitents or fanatics, but their dance is a deeply spiritual practice. The red-hot scimitar and wounds on their costumes symbolize the shedding of worldly desires and the grasping of spiritual enlightenment. The Sheikh, or spiritual leader, Ahmed Rifai, is seen at the center, guiding the dervishes through their trance-like state. This image is taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1842. It is a copy of an earlier work by Ignace Mouradgea d'Ohsson, "Tableau General de L'Empire Ottoman," published in Paris in 1790. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the engraving provide a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the Ottoman Empire and the Sufi tradition.
