EDITORS COMMENTS
Goatmoth, Cossus cossus, also known as the European processionary moth or the oak processionary moth, is a striking and intriguing insect belonging to the family Cossidae. This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Johann Carl Bock, published in Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur in 1786, captures the beauty and detail of this unique moth. The Goatmoth is so named due to its distinctive larval stage, which resembles a goat or caterpillar with a distinctively long, spiny procession. These larvae feed on the leaves of various trees, including oak, elm, and hazel, causing significant damage to the foliage. The adult moth, however, is a sight to behold. Its wingspan can reach up to 10 centimeters, and its wings are covered in a velvety texture and adorned with intricate patterns. The forewings are a rich, leopard-like brown, while the hindwings are a paler shade. The Goatmoth is part of the larger order Lepidoptera, which includes butterflies and moths. The term "Lepidoptera" comes from the Greek words "lepido," meaning scale, and "pteron," meaning wing. This order is characterized by their scaly wings, which provide them with excellent camouflage and protection. The Goatmoth undergoes complete metamorphosis, transforming from a caterpillar to a pupa, and finally to an adult moth. The pupa stage, also known as a chrysalis, is a protective casing that allows the insect to transform internally before emerging as an adult. The Goatmoth is a fascinating creature, both in its destructive larval stage and its beautiful adult form. This engraving by Johann Carl Bock serves as a testament to the intrigue and wonder that insects can inspire, and a reminder of the importance of preserving and studying these essential parts of our natural world.
