EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Ground Lackey Moth, Malacosoma castrense, also known as Phalaena castrensis. The image, created by the skilled hand of Johann Carl Bock in 1786, is part of Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' renowned work "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur," or "The Butterflies in Representations according to Nature." The Ground Lackey Moth is a large, striking insect that can be found in oak forests throughout Europe. The adult moth has a wingspan of up to 7 centimeters and is characterized by its bright orange-red body and black wings with distinctive white spots. However, this engraving captures the earlier stages of the moth's life cycle. The Ground Lackey Moth goes through complete metamorphosis, with a caterpillar stage that is quite different from the adult form. The larva, or caterpillar, is known as a processionary caterpillar due to its habit of moving in a procession-like fashion when disturbed. It is covered in dense, white hairs that give it a fuzzy appearance and help protect it from predators. The caterpillar feeds on the leaves of oak trees, and when it is ready to pupate, it constructs a silken cocoon around itself. The Ground Lackey Moth is not to be confused with the Thaumetopoea processionea, another species of processionary caterpillar that feeds on pine trees. While both species have similar appearances and habits, they belong to different genera and are distinct species. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of 18th-century natural history illustration. It provides a glimpse into the natural world of over 200 years ago and serves as a reminder of the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
