EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts a hippopotamus, or hippo, named Hippopotamus amphibius, in its enclosure at a zoological garden. The large aquatic mammal is surrounded by curious spectators and a dedicated zookeeper, who carefully observes the animal's every move. The hippo, with its powerful jaws and massive size, is a popular attraction at the zoo, drawing visitors from near and far. Originally described by the French naturalist Count Georges Buffon in his seminal work "History of the Earth and Animated Nature," this engraving is taken from William Smellie's English translation published by Thomas Kelly in London in 1829. Buffon's groundbreaking natural history text, which was widely read and influential in the 18th and 19th centuries, provided Europeans with a new understanding of the natural world, including the hippopotamus, which was rarely seen outside of Africa at the time. The hippopotamus, which means "river horse" in Greek, is a semi-aquatic mammal that spends most of its day submerged in water to keep cool in its native African habitats. Despite its intimidating appearance, it is generally a peaceful creature, only becoming aggressive when provoked or threatened. This charming engraving offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the fascination and wonder that the hippopotamus has inspired for centuries.
