In stark contrast to the opulence of the noblemen, the Italian soldiers in the foreground are dressed for battle. An archer stands at the far left, his quiver slung over his shoulder and a longbow in hand. A pikeman, armed with a pike, stands next to him, while an axe man in a small metal helmet protects himself with a shield. The illustration also features a woman, dressed in a traditional Italian gown, who gazes upon the scene with a sense of awe or admiration. Above her, an angel holds a golden brooch adorned with an image of St. John Capistrano, or Johannes Capistranus (1386-1456), a renowned preacher and founder of the Capuchin Order.
