The woman, adorned with a similar headdress and a striped skirt, carries a basket on her back and wears a bow and arrows at her side. The Isle of Paques, located in the Pacific Ocean near the coast of South America, was first discovered in 1722 by Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen. The island's inhabitants, known as the Rapa Nui people, are believed to have Polynesian origins. The image of the man and woman in this print reflects the traditional dress and customs of the Arawak and Wai people from the Guianas, who were likely used as a point of reference for European artists and writers at the time. Mary Anne Venning, the author and tutor who wrote the accompanying text for this engraving, was a prolific writer and educator during the Regency and Georgian periods.
