EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving showcases the Pacific Swift, Apus pacificus, also known as the New Holland Swallow or Hirundo pacifica. The Pacific Swift is a small, elegant bird native to the Pacific Ocean region, including Australia and New Guinea. The illustration is derived from an original work by the renowned English naturalist and artist, John Lewin, and was beautifully hand-colored by either Harriet or Edward Griffith. The Pacific Swift is characterized by its long, slender wings and streamlined body, which enable it to fly at remarkable speeds and maneuverability. They are known for their agility and are among the fastest birds in the world, reaching speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Their diet consists mainly of insects, which they catch in mid-air while flying. This illustration is taken from "The Animal Kingdom" by the esteemed French naturalist, Georges Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1828. Cuvier's work was a groundbreaking contribution to the field of natural history and zoology, and this particular volume showcases a wide range of birds from around the world. The Pacific Swift holds significant cultural importance in Australia, where it is known as the New Holland Swallow. It is a symbol of freedom and is often depicted in Aboriginal art and mythology. Today, the Pacific Swift remains a beloved and fascinating creature, inspiring awe and admiration for its beauty and speed.
