EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image, we are transported back in time to what is believed to be the early 1st century AD, when Roman London, or Londinium as it was then known, stood proudly on the north bank of the River Thames. The city, surrounded by a formidable Roman wall, was a thriving hub of activity and culture, serving as a crucial trading post for the expanding Roman Empire in Britain. The north bank of the Thames is dotted with various structures that speak to the city's rich history. To the left, the impressive Roman bridge spans the river, connecting the north and south banks. The bridge, with its arches and sturdy construction, would have allowed for the easy passage of people and goods. In the foreground, a bustling wharf scene unfolds, with ships moored at the water's edge, their sails furled and masts lowered. Merchants and sailors hustle about, loading and unloading cargo from the ships, while others gather at the nearby inn, no doubt seeking refreshment after a long journey. The city gates, including Ludgate, Newgate, Aldersgate, Cripplegate, Bishopsgate, and Aldgate, stand tall and imposing, each adorned with intricate carvings and inscriptions. The gates served as both defensive structures and entry points to the city, regulating the flow of people and goods. In the distance, the temples and basilica of the Roman Forum can be seen, where religious and civic life would have taken place. The walled enclosure of Wallbrook, believed to be the site of a Roman cemetery, is also visible, with tombstones and other funerary monuments dotting the landscape. This image offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to imagine the sights, sounds, and smells of Roman London, a city that played a pivotal role in the history of Britain and the Roman Empire.
