EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases an enchanting array of butterflies, moths, and insects, drawn from the natural world and meticulously rendered by the skilled hand of Christian Leinberger. Originally published in Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, or Select Rarities of Nature, this illustration was produced in Nuremberg in 1771. The work was part of a larger collection, known as a Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities, belonging to the esteemed naturalist P.L. Muller. The intricately detailed engraving features a diverse assortment of Lepidoptera, including the regal Monarch butterfly with its vibrant orange and black wings, and the delicate, ethereal appearance of the Cabbage White butterfly. Moths, such as the striking Luna Moth with its iridescent green wings, and the intricately patterned Emperor Moth, are also prominently displayed. Insects, like the mighty Stag Beetle with its impressive antlers, and the agile Praying Mantis, add to the captivating display. The hand-coloring process used in this engraving further enhances the natural beauty of these creatures, bringing out the intricacies of their patterns and textures. This stunning work of art serves as a testament to the fascination and wonder that the natural world holds, and the importance of documenting and preserving its diverse inhabitants for future generations.
