EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured stipple engraving, titled "Weevils and Beetles," is an exquisite example of natural history illustration from the early 19th century. Created by the skilled hand of Pancrace Bessa for Charles Malos' seminal work "Les Insectes," published in Paris in 1820 by Louis Janet, this intricately detailed print showcases a diverse array of weevils and beetles. The first weevil depicted, Eudomychus striata, is characterized by its long snout and elongated rostrum. The Calandra hemiptera, with its distinctive white markings, is a common weevil found in Europe. The pleasing fungus beetle, Erotylus species, is a small beetle that feeds on fungi. The Chrysomela striata, also known as the striped leaf beetle, is a common species found in Europe and Asia. The Acalymma vittatum, a weevil with a distinctive white stripe down its back, is often found on sunflowers. The Chrysomela arcuata, or the arched leaf beetle, is characterized by its curved elytra. The Eumorphus marginata, a large and striking weevil, is commonly known as the false longicorn beetle. The beetles in this print include the Chrysomela arcuata, a scarab beetle with curved elytra, and the Cantharis sexpunctata, a carabid beetle with six distinct punctures on each elytron. The Omophron limbatum is a dytiscid beetle, characterized by its large, flat, and broad body. The Dytique bimacule, or the two-spotted diving beetle, is a predator found in water. This beautiful and intricately detailed print is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the time, providing a window into the natural world and showcasing the incredible diversity of the weevil and beetle families.
