EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, Mrs Cecilia Bochenek, founder of the Horder Centre in Crowborough, East Sussex, warmly greets Princess Margaret as she arrives to officially open the centre on 27 October 1966. Despite her own debilitating arthritis and confinement to a wheelchair, Mrs Bochenek, along with her friend and fellow healthcare pioneer, Dr Joyce Peake, established the Horder Centre as a recuperative home specifically for individuals suffering from arthritis. The centre, named after Lord Horder of Ashford who became its first President, aimed to provide essential care and treatment for those in need, offering a much-needed respite from their daily struggles. Middle-aged and dressed in a smart suit, Mrs Bochenek exudes a sense of determination and resilience as she stands, with the aid of a stick, to greet the Princess. Princess Margaret, elegantly attired in a floral dress and hat, smiles warmly as she approaches, clearly moved by the dedication and commitment of the centre's founders. The building behind them, with its distinctive architecture, serves as a testament to the hard work and vision that went into creating this vital healthcare institution. The photograph captures a moment of hope and inspiration, highlighting the indomitable spirit of those who, despite their own challenges, strive to make a difference in the lives of others.
