EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Journey Through Time on the 1886 Savage Steam Powered Fun Fair Carousel: From the Studt Family to the Howard Brothers 2. Description: This photograph showcases the 1886 Savage Steam Powered Fun Fair Carousel, a historical treasure that has traveled through time for over a century. Measuring 38ft long with three abreast and twelve sections, this gallopers ride was originally built for the Studt family of South Wales by the renowned Savage Brothers of Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England. The carousel, powered by the Savage No. 664 Lady Golightly steam engine, was a marvel of engineering in its time. In 1912, following the death of John Studt, the ride was sold to the Whittles of Camberley. It later changed hands to Alf Whitelegg, Peter Lay, and the National Westminster Bank. The ride was lost for many years until 1996 when Jimmy Noyce began its restoration. In 2005, it was bought by the Howard Brothers and fully restored the following year, complete with a contemporary Limonaire Freres 54-key organ. Accompanying the carousel in this photograph is a John Fowler & Co. of Leeds Showmans Road Locomotive, numbered 15653, built in 1920. Registered as CU 978 and classified as R3, this compound NHP locomotive named "Renown" was a common sight at fairs during the 1970s and 1980s. Together, these historical relics transport us back in time, offering a glimpse into the rich history of funfairs and the joy they have brought to generations.
