EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the Mary Evans Picture Library, we witness the historic debut of Beagle B.206-X G-ARRM (msn 001) at the 1962 Farnborough SBAC (Society of British Aircraft Constructors) show. This image marks the first prototype of the Beagle B.206, which would later become the Beagle Basset CC.1 for the Royal Air Force (RAF). The year was 1962, and the aviation industry was brimming with innovation. The Beagle B.206-X, designed and manufactured by the British aircraft company Beagle Aircraft, was a significant development in the realm of short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft. This versatile aircraft was intended for various roles within the military, including reconnaissance, liaison, and training. G-ARRM, with its sleek and modern design, drew the attention of many at the Farnborough SBAC show. Its distinctive features included a T-tail, a high-wing configuration, and a large, unpressurized cabin that could accommodate up to six passengers or a crew of two and four trainees. Powered by a 525-horsepower Rolls-Royce Dart Mk. 312 engine, the Beagle B.206-X boasted impressive performance capabilities, including a maximum speed of 185 miles per hour and a range of 1,150 miles. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in aviation history, as the Beagle B.206-X embarked on its journey towards becoming a vital asset for the RAF. The aircraft's successful development and deployment would further solidify Beagle Aircraft's reputation as a pioneering force in the aviation industry.
