EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Dornier Do 32E ultra-light helicopter, registration D-HOPS, a groundbreaking aviation innovation from Germany during the mid-1960s. The Dornier Do 32E was a simple, collapsible one-man helicopter, powered by a BMW 6012L gas turbine. The engine drove a compressor, which supplied compressed air to the rotor tip jets, propelling the main rotor. Despite its innovative design, the Dornier Do 32E faced numerous challenges during testing, resulting in the unfortunate crashing of all three flying prototypes. The fourth un-flown aircraft, D-HOPA, is now a cherished exhibit at the Deutsches Museum in Germany. This aeronautical marvel represents an ambitious attempt to revolutionize helicopter technology through the use of a gas turbine engine and collapsible design. Although the Dornier Do 32E did not achieve commercial success, it remains an important chapter in the history of helicopter development. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the determination and ingenuity of the engineers who dared to push the boundaries of aviation technology.
