Handley Page HPR. 7 Dart-Herald G-AODE prototype

Handley Page HPR.7 Dart-Herald G-AODE (msn 147) 1st prototype, moments before the starboard engine turbine blew up, causing the engine to fall off and the aircraft to catch fire. Converted from the 1st prototype HPR.3 Herald, powered by four Alvis Leonides Major engines, G-AODE was issued a preliminary Certificate of Airworthiness on 22 April 1958. On 30 August 1958 G-AODE rendezvoused for a photo-shoot, with a Handley Page Hastings and Handley Page Victor, en-route to the 1958 SBAC Farnborough Air Show. With press and invited guests onboard the Hastings, and the Herald, the photo-shoot had just finished when a turbine disc exploded in the starboard engine, which fell off, leaving the aircraft on fire. Squadron Leader Hazleden carried out a very trying forced landing with no injuries, particularly to his wife, who was on board. The aircraft was largely consumed in the fire. Date: 1958

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph from The Peter Butt Aviation Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, we witness a pivotal moment in the history of Handley Page's HPR.7 Dart-Herald, specifically the first prototype, G-AODE (msn 147). The image captures the aircraft just before a catastrophic event: the starboard engine turbine exploding, causing the engine to fall off and the plane to catch fire. Converted from the first prototype HPR.3 Herald, the HPR.7 Dart-Herald was a significant development, featuring four Alvis Leonides Major engines instead of the previous model's piston engines. The aircraft received a preliminary Certificate of Airworthiness on 22 April 1958. On 30 August 1958, G-AODE rendezvoused with a Handley Page Hastings and Handley Page Victor for a photo-shoot en route to the 1958 SBAC Farnborough Air Show. With press and invited guests onboard, the photo-shoot had just finished when tragedy struck. A turbine disc exploded in the starboard engine, causing the engine to detach, leaving the aircraft ablaze. Squadron Leader Hazleden, who was onboard with his wife, bravely carried out a forced landing with no injuries reported. However, the aircraft was largely consumed in the fire. Despite the unfortunate incident, the HPR.7 Dart-Herald marked an essential step forward in aviation history, showcasing the transition from piston engines to turboprops in commercial aircraft. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the risks and triumphs that come with aviation innovation.
