EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in aviation history during the Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne, held near Reims, France in 1909. The image features three pioneering figures of early aviation: Hubert Latham, Henry Farman, and Roger Sommer. Hubert Latham, born on 10 January 1883, was a French aviation pioneer who gained international fame for his daring attempts to cross the English Channel in an aeroplane. In this photograph, Latham is seen flying his Antoinette IV, which he used to set the world altitude record of 155 metres (509 ft) and a world speed record of 42 mph during the event. Henry Farman, born on 26 May 1874, was an Anglo-French aviator, aircraft designer, and manufacturer, along with his brother Maurice. Before dedicating himself to aviation, Farman gained fame as a sportsman, particularly in cycling and motor racing. In the photograph, Farman is seen flying his Farman III biplane, which was a significant contribution to the development of early aviation. Roger Sommer, born on 4 August 1877, was another pioneering French aviator, who is also seen in the photograph flying a Farman III biplane. The three men are captured mid-flight, their planes silhouetted against the sky, as they participated in the aviation festival that brought together the best aviators of the time. The Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne was a significant event in the history of aviation, marking a turning point in the development of aircraft technology and the recognition of aviation as a viable means of transportation and exploration.
