EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photograph, we see the Napier Eland Convair 340-440 Mark II (Convair 440-62), registration number N440EL, proudly displayed at PacAero Engineering Corporation in Santa Monica, California. This aircraft was built in 1957 and originally delivered to D. Napier & Sons Ltd. for conversion to the prototype Napier Eland Convair 340-440 Mark II. Powered by three, 060 e.s.h.p. Napier N.El.1 Eland turboprop engines, the aircraft underwent extensive flight testing at PacAero before being delivered to Allegheny Airlines in 1959. However, when support for the Eland engines was withdrawn by Rolls-Royce, the aircraft was once again converted, this time to CV-580 standard, powered by Allison 501D-13 turboprop engines. The aircraft was then registered in Venezuela as YV-59C during 1976. Tragically, on 11 November 1977, the aircraft was written off at Juan V. Gomez International Airport in San Antonio del Tachira, Venezuela. This image captures a moment in aviation history, as the Napier Eland Convair 340-440 Mark II sat at PacAero, waiting for its next transformation. The intricacies of the Convair's design are on full display, from the sleek wings to the powerful engines, making this a fascinating glimpse into the past.
