EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph showcases the Stroukoff YC-123E Provider 55-4031, a unique military aircraft that underwent significant modifications by Stroukoff Aircraft Corp in Trenton, New Jersey. Originally an unfinished Chase C-123B-CN Provider with serial number 52-1630 and manufacturing serial number 20003, this airframe was cancelled in 1952. When Fairchild Aircraft took over the project, the serial number was changed to 54-0554, and upon completion, the aircraft was allocated to Stroukoff for conversion to the Pantobase undercarriage standard. Equipped with Pantobase undercarriage and wing-tip floats, this versatile aircraft was capable of operating effectively on water, snow, ice, and sand, as well as land. The Pantobase undercarriage system allowed for the use of large, inflatable tires that could be deflated for water takeoffs and landings, while the wing-tip floats provided additional stability and buoyancy. The Stroukoff YC-123E Provider 55-4031 represents an intriguing chapter in the history of military aviation, showcasing the innovative adaptability of aircraft design to meet the demands of various operational environments.
