This portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Sultan Mustafa I Deli, the Ottoman Turks' ruler from 1617 to 1618 and again from 1622 to 1623. Born as Mustafa ibn Mehmed in 1591, he was the son of Mehmed III, the reigning Sultan of the mighty Ottoman Empire. Mustafa I Deli's turbans adorned with precious jewels and intricate embroidery symbolize his high rank and wealth.
