EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Sultan Mustafa I Deli, the Ottoman Turks' ruler from 1617 to 1618 and again from 1622 to 1623. Born as Mustafa ibn Mehmed in 1591, he was the son of Mehmed III, the reigning Sultan of the mighty Ottoman Empire. Mustafa I Deli's turbans adorned with precious jewels and intricate embroidery symbolize his high rank and wealth. The oval frame, a common feature in Ottoman portraits, emphasizes the importance of the subject. The script and writing on the border are in Max Fruchtermann's hand, a renowned German Orientalist and historian, adding historical significance to the image. Mustafa I Deli's reign was marked by political instability and conflict. He was initially deposed in 1618 due to the opposition of the Janissaries, the powerful military corps of the Ottoman Empire. However, he managed to regain the throne in 1622 following the death of his successor, Murad IV. His second reign was short-lived, as he was assassinated in 1623. Despite his brief tenure, Mustafa I Deli's legacy as the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire remains an intriguing chapter in Turkish and world history. This evocative portrait offers a glimpse into the grandeur and complexity of the Ottoman Empire during the early 17th century.
