EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the moment of the Unknown Warrior's burial service in Westminster Abbey on 11 November 1920. The Unknown Warrior, an unidentified British soldier from the First World War, was chosen to represent the thousands of soldiers who had made the ultimate sacrifice in the conflict. The coffin, shrouded in the Padre's Flag that had been through the war on the Western Front, was placed above an open grave. On top of the coffin, a steel helmet, side-arms, and the King's wreath were placed as a tribute. King George V, dressed in military uniform, stands at the head of the grave, surrounded by his sons and other distinguished members of the congregation. To the left, Queen Mary, the Queen Mother (Alexandra), the Queen of Spain, and Princess Mary can be seen. The service was conducted by the Dean of Westminster, who faces the grave in the foreground. The solemnity of the occasion is palpable as the nation paid its respects to the fallen hero. This historic image, created by renowned artist Fortunino Matania for Lloyd's War News, is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War and the unity of the nation in mourning its losses. The Unknown Warrior's burial marked the end of the war's official commemoration, but his memory continues to be honored every Remembrance Day.
