EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Doris Delavigne, Viscountess Castlerosse, gracefully embodies the essence of a fish course at the enchanting Santa Claus Ball held on 18 December 1929. This extraordinary event took place at the prestigious Kit-Cat club in aid of Queen Charlotte's Hospital National Mother-Saving Campaign. The theme of the night was Queen Charlotte's Christmas Dinner, where prominent Society beauties transformed into various courses, wine, spirits, and puddings, adding an element of whimsy and delight to the festivities. The visionary artist Mrs. Peter Baxendale was responsible for designing the fantastical costumes, including Viscountess Castlerosse's exquisite fish ensemble. Her meticulously crafted attire features a shimmering, iridescent scales-inspired fabric, evoking the allure of the underwater world. The viscountess's flowing, mermaid-like hair cascades down her back, further enhancing her fish-like appearance. The Santa Claus Ball, organized by the inimitable Barbara, was a night filled with merriment, elegance, and charitable giving. The pageant, featuring the dazzling transformation of high society figures into various edible delights, added an unforgettable touch to the already magical evening. This photograph serves as a testament to the creativity, extravagance, and spirit of the era, offering a glimpse into the enchanting world of 1920s socialites.
