Asquith Xavier in his new job as a guard at Euston Station, London

Asquith Xavier in his new job as a guard at Euston Station, London.
The story - In 1966: Euston staff colour bar ended
A West Indian refused a job at Euston Station will now be employed there after managers overturned a ban on black workers. Two months ago Asquith Xavier, a train guard from Dominica, was refused a transfer from Marylebone Station to Euston because of his colour.
The new job would have meant a pay increase of around £ 10 a week for Mr Xavier who started work for British Railways (BR) as a porter 10 years ago.He was informed about his rejection and the reason for it in a letter from Eustons local staff committee whose members belong to the National Union of Railwaymen (NUR).
However, at a news conference on Friday BR spokesman Leslie Leppington said the colour bar at Euston Station had now been ended and Mr Xavier would be given a job.

Asquith Xavier Breaks Barriers - A Triumph of Justice and Equality

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this powerful photo print, we witness a historic moment in the fight against racial discrimination. Asquith Xavier stands tall and proud in his new role as a guard at Euston Station, London. The year is 1966, an era marked by deep racial tensions and prejudice. Just two months ago, Mr. Xavier faced rejection when he sought to transfer from Marylebone Station due to the color of his skin. Shockingly, the local staff committee at Euston had upheld a discriminatory policy that barred black workers from employment opportunities. However, justice has prevailed! British Railways (BR) has taken a stand against this injustice and overturned the ban on black workers at Euston Station. At a news conference held recently, BR spokesperson Leslie Leppington announced that Mr. Xavier would finally be given the job he rightfully deserved. This victory not only signifies progress towards equality but also brings hope for countless others facing similar discrimination across various industries. It serves as a reminder that unity can dismantle even the most entrenched barriers. Asquith Xavier's journey represents resilience in the face of adversity and highlights how individuals can challenge systemic racism with determination and courage. His appointment as a guard not only symbolizes personal triumph but also marks an important milestone in race relations within Britain's rail industry. Let us celebrate this significant step forward towards inclusivity while acknowledging there is still much work to be done to eradicate all forms of racial discrimination from our society.
