In this heart-wrenching moment, a brave man is seen valiantly saving his wife from the clutches of a crocodile in a treacherous river. The image, created by an English School artist in the 19th century, depicts an account written by Father Navaretti in his Travels during Manila's colonial period. Tragically, despite her husband's heroic efforts, the woman succumbed to her injuries and lost her life. This poignant anecdote serves as a reminder of both human resilience and nature's unforgiving power. The crocodile featured in this artwork is believed to be the critically endangered Philippine crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis), also known as Mindoro crocodile or bukarot. Handcoloured copperplate engraving techniques were employed to bring this scientific illustration to life.
