EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite Early English terrestrial globe, dating back to approximately 1673. Crafted by the skilled hands of William Berry and Robert Morden, this stunning piece is a true testament to their artistry and craftsmanship. Standing at an impressive height of 53 cm, it is a remarkable example of the globemaking tradition during that era. The globe itself consists of twelve meticulously hand-colored engraved gores and two polar calottes. Its cartouche proudly declares it as "A New TERRESTRIAL GLOBE" made and sold by Morden and Berry in London. The continents are adorned with depictions of animals and natives, while the seas feature intricate illustrations of ships, sea monsters, and rhumb lines. Notably absent from this depiction is the Antarctic continent, but Australia can be partially seen delineated to its west and north. California appears as an island, while Canada's western and northern coasts are missing. Southern Greenland is depicted as a series of islands. The globe rests on a graduated brass meridian ring which fits into a horizon ring adorned with engraved calendrical scales. It stands proudly on a walnut and oak stand supported by six legs - three featuring turned twists - united with cross stretchers under a central plate. This rare find offers us not only historical insight but also serves as a reminder of the incredible skill possessed by these talented artisans centuries ago.
