EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the playful camaraderie of Grand Dukes Alexander Alexandrovich and Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia, taken around 1870-1875. Artist Sergei Levitsky masterfully portrays the future Tsar Alexander III, positioned at the top right, alongside his younger brother, Grand Duke Vladimir on the left. The two brothers are joined by their cousins Nicholas Maxilimianovich and Sergei Maximilianovich of Leuchtenberg. In this regal portrait, we witness a rare moment of lightheartedness within the Romanov dynasty. The grand dukes appear to be fooling around as they line up together, gesturing with their hands in jest. Their military uniforms add an air of authority to their mischievous demeanor. Alexander Alexandrovich would go on to reign as Emperor of Russia from 1881 until his untimely death in 1894. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Nicholas II. This image serves as a poignant reminder that even those born into royalty can find joy in simple moments with loved ones. Preserved in the Russian State Film and Photo Archive in Krasnogorsk, this photograph is a testament to Sergei Levitsky's artistic talent and his ability to capture both the grandeur and humanity within royal families. It offers us a glimpse into a bygone era when monarchy ruled supreme and reminds us that behind every ruler lies a person capable of laughter and connection.
