EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Per Olof Amundsson Länta, a Sami man from Sirka's village, during the ethnological expedition to Lapland led by his Swedish hosts, Gustaf and Carolina Charlotta Mariana von Duben, in the late 1860s. The photograph, taken by Lotten von Duben, offers a rare glimpse into the traditional attire and way of life of the indigenous Sami people from northern Europe. Per Olof wears a colorful coat and jacket, with intricate patterns and fur trim, over a simple white shirt and trousers. His hair is styled in a side parting and worn long, with a small braid at the back. The portrait's sepia tone adds to its timeless and nostalgic quality. The direct gaze of Per Olof, as he looks at the camera, conveys a sense of pride and concern for the preservation of his cultural heritage. This photograph is an invaluable contribution to the ethnographic and anthropological record of the Sami people and their traditions, and is now part of the collection of the Nordic Museum Foundation in Sweden.
