Wilbur Wright, American aviation pioneer, 1908 (1956)

Wilbur Wright, American aviation pioneer, 1908 (1956). Wright, together with his brother Orville, was an American co-inventor of aircraft. They originally designed and built bicycles but changed their interest to flying, producing a controllable glider by 1902, and a year later the first aircraft, Flyer I. This was piloted by Orville on 17th December 1903 in the first powered and controlled aircraft flight. The Flyer III, built in 1905, was the first efficient plane and, by 1909, the American army had ordered a military version. From the Science Museum, London. A print from People, a volume about the origin and early history of many things, common and less common, essential and inessential, by Readers Union, the Grosvenor Press, London, 1956

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Wilbur Wright, an American aviation pioneer. Taken in 1908 but printed in 1956, it showcases a man who revolutionized the world of flight alongside his brother Orville. The Wright brothers began their journey as bicycle designers and builders before shifting their focus to the skies. In 1902, they successfully constructed a controllable glider, followed by Flyer I - the first-ever aircraft - just a year later. It was on December 17th, 1903 that Orville piloted this groundbreaking invention in history's inaugural powered and controlled aircraft flight. The Flyer III, built in 1905, marked another milestone as it became the first efficient plane. Its success led to an order from the American army for a military version by 1909. Wilbur Wright's contributions to aviation technology were truly remarkable. This portrait showcases Wilbur with his signature headgear - a cap that symbolizes his dedication and passion for flying. His handwritten signature adds a personal touch to this historic image. Displayed at London's Science Museum, this print is part of "People" which explores various origins and early histories of both essential and nonessential things. It serves as a timeless reminder of Wilbur Wright's pioneering spirit and enduring impact on air transport worldwide.
