EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time during the construction of Section B of the iconic Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6) in Staffordshire. The image showcases a hive of activity as a team of dedicated workers, clad in their work attire, diligently carry out various tasks under the watchful eye of an impressive crane. The focal point of the photograph is undoubtedly the engine on a narrow gauge railway, which adds an element of intrigue to this snapshot from history. This locomotive played a crucial role in transporting materials and equipment along the construction site, ensuring smooth progress on this ambitious project. The significance of this particular scene is further emphasized by its registration as Site Repair Services B. 1. M6 within Historic England's collection registers. It serves as a testament to John Laing Construction Ltd. , who undertook this monumental task starting from June 1960. As we gaze upon this remarkable image, we are transported back to an era where hard work and determination were essential ingredients for building vital infrastructure that would shape our modern world. The presence of machinery and railway tracks juxtaposed against human labor reminds us that progress is achieved through collaboration between man and machine. This print not only preserves a piece of history but also invites us to reflect on how far we have come since those early days when dreams turned into reality with every brick laid along the Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6).
