EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of forty-eight vignettes capturing the artistry and intensity of bullfighting manoeuvers. Created between 1800 and 1850, these woodcut scenes have been meticulously hand-coloured using stencils, adding depth and vibrancy to each image. The sheet measures an impressive 16 15/16 x 12 5/16 inches (431 x 313 cm), making it a striking piece that commands attention. The prints originate from the esteemed publishing house of Juan Piferrer in Barcelona, known for its dedication to preserving Spanish cultural heritage. Established in the early 18th century, this family-run business continued under the guidance of members such as Xavier Burgos and Manuel Pega until its closure in 1868. Steeped in tradition and history, these vignettes offer a glimpse into the world of bullfighting during this era. Each scene depicts different aspects of the ring, showcasing various manoeuvers executed by skilled matadors. From elegant passes with capes to daring sword thrusts, every detail is captured with precision and artistic flair. While we do not know the identity of the anonymous artist responsible for these exquisite prints, their talent shines through in every stroke. This rare find from La Imprenta y Negocio del Libro en la Siglo XVIII (the printing press and bookshop) transports us back to a time when bullfighting was both revered as an art form and celebrated as a spectacle.
