EDITORS COMMENTS
This delightful caricature captures the playful spirit and exuberant energy of the Can-Can dancers who captivated audiences in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dating back to circa 1905, this print offers a humorous take on the iconic dance that became synonymous with Parisian nightlife and the Moulin Rouge. The Can-Can, a lively and provocative dance, originated in the Montmartre district of Paris in the 1830s. It was initially performed by working-class women in cabarets and music halls as a form of entertainment for the local soldiers and laborers. However, it wasn't until the 1880s and 1890s that the dance gained widespread popularity and notoriety, thanks in part to the Moulin Rouge and its star dancer, La Goulue. In this caricature, the dancers are depicted with exaggerated features, including oversized bouquets of flowers, exaggerated facial expressions, and voluminous skirts. Their high-kicking moves and playful poses are sure to bring a smile to the face of any viewer. The dancers' costumes, complete with fishnet stockings and garters, add to the allure and seductiveness of the dance. Despite its provocative reputation, the Can-Can was an important part of the cultural history of Paris and the world. It represented a time of artistic and social change, as well as a celebration of the human body and the joy of movement. This caricature serves as a reminder of the dance's enduring legacy and the role it played in shaping the entertainment industry and our collective imagination.
