EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 21: Black-rumped Flameback Woodpecker (Dinopium benghalense), by Pieter Cornelis de Bevere (1710-1789), from the Loten Collection of Coloured Drawings of Birds, Mammals, Insects & Plants (1754-57). This exquisite painting depicts a Black-rumped Flameback Woodpecker (Dinopium benghalense), also known as the Black Rumped Flameback or the Lesser Flameback, perched on a tree branch. The bird's vibrant red crest and underparts contrast sharply with its black back and rump, making it a striking and easily identifiable species. The Black-rumped Flameback is a medium-sized woodpecker native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is a member of the Picidae family, which includes other well-known woodpeckers such as the Hairy Woodpecker and the Pileated Woodpecker. In this painting, the woodpecker is shown with its distinctive long, curved beak, which it uses to drill into trees in search of insects and other food sources. The tree in the background is adorned with lush, green leaves, adding to the sense of depth and naturalism in the artwork. Pieter Cornelis de Bevere (1710-1789), the artist behind this masterpiece, was a Flemish painter and naturalist. He was a prolific artist who produced a vast body of work, including numerous studies of birds, mammals, and plants. His attention to detail and ability to capture the essence of his subjects made him a respected figure in the world of natural history illustration during the 18th century. This painting is part of the Loten Collection of Coloured Drawings of Birds, Mammals, Insects & Plants, which was compiled by the Dutch physician and naturalist, Joan Gideon Loten (1722-1781). Loten was a dedicated collector and scholar who amassed an impressive collection of natural history specimens and illustrations during his travels throughout Asia. The collection was later acquired by the Dutch East India Company and is now housed in various museums and institutions around the world.
