EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Dolciano, oboe, bassoon, oboe da caccia and basset horn," is an exquisite illustration of a collection of historical woodwind instruments. The illustration, created by William Gibb, was published in 1888 as part of A.J. Hipkins' "Historic, Rare and Unique Musical Instruments," a comprehensive work on the history of various musical instruments. At the center of the image, we find the Dolciano, an early type of oboe with a distinctive conical bore and a narrow, tapering bell. Surrounding it are other intriguing woodwind instruments of the time. To the left, there is a single reed bassoon, characterized by its large, cylindrical body and bell, which produced a rich, resonant sound. To the right, we see an oboe da caccia, a double reed instrument with a long, straight, cylindrical body and a large, flared bell, used primarily for hunting parties and outdoor music. Nearby, a basset horn rests, with its distinctive curved shape and narrow, conical bore, which gave it a warm, mellow sound. Additionally, there are other less common woodwind instruments depicted in the illustration, such as the afranio, a type of oboe with a distinctive double bell, and the ferrara, a bass pommer, which is a large, double-reed instrument with a bulbous body and a wide, flared bell. In the background, there are an altoclarinet and other woodwind instruments, adding to the rich tapestry of music history. This chromolithograph is a testament to the intriguing world of historical musical instruments and the dedicated work of musicologists like Alfred James Hipkins, who sought to document and preserve the history of these unique creations. The vibrant colors and meticulous details in the illustration bring these instruments to life, allowing us to appreciate their beauty and significance in the annals of music history.
