In this print, mythological hero Bellerophon boldly rides atop the magnificent Pegasus, the winged horse, as they charge towards the monstrous Chimera. This scene is taken from the rich tapestry of ancient Greek mythology, where Bellerophon is depicted as a brave and skilled warrior, chosen by the gods to complete a perilous task for Iobates, the king of Lycia. The Chimera, a terrifying creature with the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a serpent, was a fearsome beast that had been terrorizing the land. Iobates, desperate to protect his people, called upon Bellerophon for help. With the divine assistance of Athena and Poseidon, Bellerophon was granted the use of Pegasus, the winged horse, to aid him in his quest. As depicted in this print, Bellerophon expertly holds onto Pegasus with one hand, while brandishing a spear in the other, ready to strike the Chimera. The monstrous beast, with its fiery breath and menacing roar, lunges towards them, its heads snarling in fury. The scene is one of epic heroism and the triumph of good over evil, as Bellerophon and Pegasus prepare to vanquish the Chimera and bring peace to the land of Lycia.
