Lefort served under Tsar Peter the Great, who was determined to modernize and westernize his country after years of isolation from European influences. Born in France around 1656, Lefort first came to Russia in 1676 as part of a diplomatic mission. Impressed by his military prowess, Tsar Peter offered him a position in the Russian army.
