Christabel Pankhurst defending herself in court 1908
Christabel Pankhurst shown defending the " rush" on the House of Commons and her role in it at Bow Street Magistrates Court, London. The Sphere describes speeches given by her mother, Emmeline Pankhurst, and Flora Drummond who are also shown in the illustration, as well as comparing Chistabel to Portia, who famously won her defence of Antonio disguised as a man in Shakespeares Merchant of Venice. Despite this, all three women lost their case; Flora Drummond and Emmeline Pankhurst serving three months in prison and Christabel Pankhurst ten weeks.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determination and courage of three pioneering women - Christabel Pankhurst, Emmeline Pankhurst, and Flora Drummond - as they defended their actions during the infamous "rush" on the House of Commons in October 1908. The image, taken at Bow Street Magistrates Court in London, shows Christabel passionately addressing the magistrate, her mother Emmeline and Flora Drummond looking on. The Sphere reported that Emmeline and Flora also delivered impassioned speeches, with Emmeline comparing her daughters' actions to the famous defense of Antonio by Portia in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. Despite their eloquent defenses, all three women were sentenced to prison terms. Christabel received the harshest sentence, serving ten weeks, while Emmeline and Flora were both sentenced to three months. Their militant activism, as members of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), was aimed at securing the right to vote for women, a cause that had gained significant momentum in the early 20th century. The women's actions, including the "rush" on the House of Commons, were part of their militant campaign for women's suffrage and enfranchisement. This powerful photograph is a testament to the women's unwavering commitment to their cause and their willingness to face the consequences of their actions. Their sacrifices paved the way for the eventual extension of the franchise to women in the UK, a landmark achievement in the history of women's rights and activism.
