EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the field of entomology published between 1824 and 1839. The plate in question is number 527, featuring the Lepidopteran species Pyralis cribralis, now known as Microchilo cribrumalis, commonly referred to as the Dotted Fan-foot. The intricately detailed illustration showcases the adult moth with its distinctive wings adorned with small, evenly spaced dots, giving it a textured appearance. The plant depicted in the background is Epipactis palustris, also known as the Marsh Epipactis. This beautiful orchid-like plant is native to wetlands and bogs across Europe and parts of Asia. Its white, nodding flowers bloom from late summer to early autumn, attracting various pollinators, including moths. John Curtis, FLS, was a renowned British naturalist and entomologist who dedicated his life to the study and documentation of insects. His meticulous work on British Entomology remains a valuable resource for researchers and enthusiasts alike, providing a detailed record of the natural history of the United Kingdom during the 19th century. The Dotted Fan-foot is a small moth with a wingspan of approximately 2.5 centimeters. It is found throughout Europe, and its larvae feed on various decaying plant matter, making them important decomposers in their ecosystems. The adult moths are attracted to the nectar of various flowers, including the Marsh Epipactis, making this illustration a beautiful representation of the intricate relationships between different organisms in the natural world.
