The final battle of the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-1654) took place off the coast of the Netherlands, with both the British and Dutch navies engaging in intense combat. Admiral Maarten Tromp (1597-1653), a renowned Dutch naval commander, is depicted in the print lying mortally wounded on the deck of his ship, the "Prins Willem."
