This striking image captures the poignant moment of the death of Admiral Maarten Tromp during the Battle of Scheveningen on 31 July 1653. The final battle of the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-1654) took place off the coast of the Netherlands, with both the British and Dutch navies engaging in intense combat. Admiral Maarten Tromp (1597-1653), a renowned Dutch naval commander, is depicted in the print lying mortally wounded on the deck of his ship, the "Prins Willem." The admiral, dressed in his full regalia, is surrounded by his crew, who are attempting to revive him.
