EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Jungle-runner, Ameiva ameiva, and Golden Tegu, Tupinambis teguixin," is a stunning illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Carini, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretreatment and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The image showcases two intriguing creatures native to the jungles of South America. In the foreground, a Jungle-runner, also known as the Common Tegu or the Fire Salamander, is depicted. This lizard, identified by its scientific name Ameiva ameiva, is characterized by its vibrant colors, with a body adorned in shades of red, orange, and black. The Jungle-runner is a terrestrial species, commonly found in Central and South America, and is known for its agility and ability to change color to blend in with its surroundings. In the background, a Golden Tegu, Tupinambis teguixin, is illustrated. This tegu, also known as the Savanna Tegu or the Great Crested Newt, is a large, powerful lizard with a golden-yellow body and distinctive black bands. This reptile, which is critically endangered in some areas, is native to South America and is known for its sharp teeth and strong jaws. The Golden Tegu is a semi-aquatic species, and it is an important part of the food chain in its ecosystem. Turpin, the French botanical illustrator who oversaw the creation of this illustration, is considered one of the greatest of the 19th century. His meticulous attention to detail and dedication to capturing the natural world accurately is evident in this beautiful engraving. The use of hand-coloring adds an extra layer of vibrancy and depth to the image, making it a true masterpiece of herpetological illustration.
