EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Red Mangrove tree, scientifically known as Rhozophora mangle, a remarkable and iconic species native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Western Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. The Red Mangrove is easily identifiable by its prop roots, which provide support and enable the tree to thrive in brackish water and muddy coastal areas. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi and drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill. The Red Mangrove has historical significance beyond its natural beauty. Its bark has been used for various purposes, including as a source of red dye, known as Annatto or Achiote, which has been used for centuries as a food colourant, lipstick, and even as a condiment. The tree's fruit, known as the mangle or bixa, is also edible and has been used as a spice and condiment, particularly in Latin American cuisine. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the rich history of botany and the importance of documenting the natural world for scientific and artistic purposes. The Red Mangrove continues to be an essential part of coastal ecosystems and a source of inspiration for generations to come.
