EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a Silver-grey Dorking hen, a breed of domestic fowl that was the pride of Victorian poultry shows during the late 19th century. Bred by O.F. Cresswell, this Silver-grey Dorking hen was a first prize winner at Ashford and a second prize winner at Birmingham in 1872. The intricately detailed illustration was created by J.W. Ludlow and published by Vincent Brooks Day & Son, based on an original work from Lewis Wright's "The Illustrated Book of Poultry." The Silver-grey Dorking hen, a variety of the native British breed Dorking, was popular for its unique silver-grey plumage and elegant shape. Its Asian origins, with influences from Ayam Jallak, Malay Game Fowl, and Chinese Silkies, added an exotic allure to this bird. The Dorking breed was highly sought after during the Victorian era for both exhibition and table purposes. The ornithology craze during this time led to an increased interest in breeding and exhibiting various poultry breeds, with poultry shows becoming a popular form of entertainment. The Silver-grey Dorking hen's success at these events showcases the breed's popularity and the dedication of breeders during this era. Despite its elegant appearance, it's important to note that the Silver-grey Dorking hen, like many other poultry breeds during this time, was also used for cockfighting. The fever for exotic and game birds fueled the demand for these breeds, both for exhibition and for the bloodsport. This image offers a glimpse into the rich history of poultry breeding during the Victorian era and the fascination with exotic and native birds.
