EDITORS COMMENTS
View over Dikkebus Lake, Dickebusch, Belgium (2010): A tranquil scene of Dikkebus Lake in Dickebusch, Belgium, reflects the history of this area as a site of rest and medical services during World War I. Dickebusch, meaning 'hick forest,' was once a dense woodland that saw intense fighting during the First World War. In May 1918, the Germans reached the lake's shores but were unable to take it, making this area a temporary resting place for soldiers. Tents and huts were set up, and medical services were established to care for the sick and wounded. Noel Chavasse, a British Army officer, held sick parades nearby, as recounted in Ann Clayton's book "Chavasse Double VC." The lake, located near Ypres (Ieper) in Flanders, holds a significant place in the history of World War I, serving as a reminder of the hardships and sacrifices made by soldiers during this time. This photograph, taken in 2010, captures the serene beauty of the lake and its historical significance.
