EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving showcases Louis Philippe Joseph, Duke of Montpensier and Orleans, also known as Philippe Egalite, in the late 18th century. Born in 1747, he was a French prince and the grandson of the Regent Philippe d'Orléans. Philippe Egalite's life was marked by significant historical events, particularly his involvement in the French Revolution. The image portrays the Duke wearing the distinctive hat of a Grand Master of Freemasonry, reflecting his membership in this secretive organization. Freemasonry, which emphasized the principles of brotherhood, equality, and individual liberty, gained popularity during the Enlightenment and played a role in the French Revolution. Philippe Egalite's membership in the Freemasons added to his progressive reputation. As the French Revolution unfolded, Philippe Egalite initially supported the monarchy but later became a key figure in the National Assembly. In 1792, he was instrumental in the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, which proclaimed the fundamental human and civil rights of all the estates of the realm as rational and moral beings. This marked a significant shift in his political stance, earning him the nickname "Egalite" (Equality). The Duke's transformation from a privileged prince to a champion of the people's rights was remarkable. This engraving captures a pivotal moment in his life, symbolizing the tumultuous changes that swept through France during the late 18th century.
