EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning black-and-white photograph captures the sleek and innovative Loving WR-1 Special N351C, a one-of-a-kind Formula One racer designed and built by Neal Loving in Detroit, Michigan around 1950. With a race number 64 emblazoned on its side, this all-wood, inverted gull-wing midget racer was a true engineering marvel of its time. Powered by a 85hp Continental C85-8FJ engine, the WR-1 Special had a wingspan of 20 feet, a length of 17 feet 2 inches, and a maximum speed of an impressive 215 mph. Its cruise speed was 142 mph, with a stall speed of 58 mph, and a range of 450 miles. The aircraft reached an astonishing speed of 266 mph after a dive. Despite losing both feet in a glider crash during World War II, Loving's determination and passion for aviation led him to design and fly the WR-1 Special. The aircraft made its first flight on August 7, 1950. After an impressive racing career, the WR-1 Special was donated to the Experimental Aircraft Association in 1964. Plans for home-building projects based on the WR-1 Special were also sold, allowing other aviation enthusiasts to experience the thrill of flying this iconic racer. This photograph is a testament to Loving's ingenuity, resilience, and the spirit of innovation that defines the world of aviation.
