EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures a United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Douglas C-47-DL Skytrain with the registration number 41-18608 (MSN 4769) during its time at the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment (A&AEE) in Boscombe Down, Wiltshire, United Kingdom. The image was taken in late 1942, just before the aircraft was shipped to North Africa on 22 January 1943. The C-47, also known as the Skytrain, was a military variant of the Douglas DC-3 airliner. This specific aircraft was initially bailed to the A&AEE for evaluation and testing before being deployed to the 43rd Troop Carrier Squadron of the 315th Troop Carrier Group in the Ninth Air Force. The squadron was based at RAF Spanhoe (Station 493) in the United Kingdom, in support of the 8th Air Force. However, the aircraft's tenure in the UK was short-lived. On 16 April 1943, it was involved in a landing accident at the USAAF depot at RAF Burtonwood (Station 590). The damage was extensive, and the aircraft was condemned by 31 October 1944. This photograph is a testament to the history of the USAAF's use of the Douglas C-47-DL Skytrain during World War II and the crucial role it played in transporting troops and supplies to various theaters of operation.
