EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Princess Sophie of Greece, later Princess of Hesse-Cassel and Princess of Hanover, is seen with her two elder sons, Prince Welf Frederick and Prince Georg, and her parents-in-law, former Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia and her husband Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick. The image captures a moment of familial warmth and connection, as the royal figures gather together in a spacious room adorned with ornate furnishings and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. Princess Sophie, born in 1914 as a member of the Greek royal family, was the daughter of Prince and Princess Andrew of Greece (Alice of Battenberg). She later married firstly Georg Donatus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, and later, in 1966, Ernst August, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, becoming the Duchess of Brunswick and later, after his death in 1958, the Duchess of Brunswick and Lüneburg and Princess of Hanover. Her two sons, Prince Welf Frederick and Prince Georg, were born from her first marriage. In the photograph, they are seen as young boys, dressed in formal attire and standing proudly next to their mother and grandparents. On the left side of the image, former Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia, the youngest child and daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II, is seated in a chair, her regal presence evident as she gazes intently at the camera. Her husband, Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick, is standing next to her, his stern expression softened by the loving atmosphere of the scene. The photograph, taken around 1953, offers a glimpse into the lives of these prominent European royals and their close family ties. The image is a testament to the rich history and complex web of connections that bind the royal families of Greece, Prussia, and Hanover.
